Why climate change might be making property mould worse

March 2, 2026

Climate change may have a major impact on our homes and properties, as it can create the perfect breeding ground for mould. Learn more here.

Climate change is a fact of life for everyone, making it important to consider ways to mitigate its effects. From hotter temperatures to wilder weather, many people are already aware of those potential effects on everyday life.

However, one of the lesser known challenges may be managing increased mould in our homes.

As the climate becomes warmer and wetter across Aotearoa, the conditions that allow mould to thrive will only increase.

Increased humidity

Mould thrives in damp, humid environments. As the weather warms up and we experience more rainfall and humidity, we can expect more mould in our homes.

“If there is also a rise in humidity, this may result in health issues from an increase in mould and fungal growth,” says the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment

This is all because warmer air holds more moisture, and that moisture can build up on walls, ceilings, carpets, and around windows. The result is the perfect breeding ground for mould spores.

More rainfall and flooding

New Zealand has already seen numerous significant rainfall and flooding events in recent years, with catastrophic consequences. Climate change is expected to continue increasing such events, with more rain and more flooding throughout the country.

Even though homes are designed to withstand adverse weather, these increased events may put pressure on properties. Flooding and significant rain can penetrate roofs, walls, and foundations, and can sometimes go unnoticed for long periods of time. Repeated exposure will only worsen the problem.

Once moisture is inside the property, it can be a major cause of mould growth. Homeowners will need to prepare to shore up their homes against potential dampness and water to prevent mould before it can take hold.

Warmer winters

As much as many of us would prefer warmer days through winter, the sad reality is that this trend could also increase mould in our homes.

Specifically, warm winter days can change how condensation occurs. This happens when warmer air comes in contact with cold surfaces, such as single-glazed windows. The warmer air meeting cold surfaces around the home can lead to more condensation, and therefore more dampness and a higher potential for mould growth.

How to keep an eye out for mould in your home

One of the more dangerous aspects of mould is how it can go unnoticed for long periods of time, allowing it to take hold and start causing health issues without you even realising it. Mould can grow in hidden areas behind furniture, in dark corners, in closets, and behind curtains, all where it’s difficult to spot – and therefore treat.

Regular checks around your home can help you detect mould early before it spreads. Start by looking for visible signs such as black, green, or white patches on walls, ceilings, window frames, and skirting boards. Mould often appears in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, and anywhere with limited airflow, so check these areas most often.

You can also put your sense of smell to work – sometimes you might be able to smell the mould before you see it.

Also, make it a habit to check for leaks or water staining after heavy rain or major weather events.

Professional mould removal

If you do find mould in your home, the sooner you have it professionally removed, the better. The longer you leave it, the more the mould can spread, which makes it harder to remove in the long run (and potentially more hazardous for your health).

Keep in mind, surface cleaning mould is often not enough to remove the spores completely, which means they can quickly return. A professional removal job will chemically clean the area to kill and remove the spores to ensure they cannot regrow. Our technicians will also assess the area and determine the moisture source that caused the mould in the first place, so you can take steps to avoid it returning in the future.
