Environmental Laws and Regulations: How They Protect the Planet
November 20, 2024Environmental laws and regulations exist to keep both humans and the environment safe from hazardous materials. We follow them on every project, every time.
PRO Environmental Services offers an important service in New Zealand. We don’t just remove asbestos, but a wide variety of hazardous waste and environmental pollutants.
Of course, this line of work is heavily regulated to protect everyone and everything involved. Our staff are highly trained and supplied with all of the necessary protective gear to keep themselves safe from harm, and we work diligently to follow all regulations to minimise any potential to the environment around us as well.
What are environmental laws and regulations?
The New Zealand government has an array of laws and regulations in place to protect the environment, preventing harm to flora, fauna, and humans.
For example, Resource Management (National Environmental Standard for Assessing and Managing Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health) Regulations 2011, outlines how professionals must act when working with soil. That includes things like changing a fuel storage system, taking samples of contaminated soil, or simply making changes to the land.
If a company is disturbing soil, there must be certain controls in place to minimise any exposure for humans on site. Additionally, the soil must be returned to an erosion-resistant state after the work is done to minimise the risk of further exposure, and the activity cannot take more than two months,
These examples are just a small subset of the rules – and plain common sense – that PRO Environmental Services uses when carrying out any kind of work, be it asbestos removal, soil remediation, or environmental cleaning.
How PRO Environmental Services ensures all our work complies with local laws and regulations
Whether we’re removing asbestos in Wellington or doing a deep environmental clean in Kapiti, PRO Environmental Services takes care to follow every law to the letter.
It all begins with our team. Compiled of seasoned experts and new trainees, we only work with professionals who are dedicated to the safety of their fellow colleagues, clients, and the general public.
We also ensure each team member is highly trained for the task at hand, with refreshers as necessary. This means we all stay up to date on the rules, but also how to ensure we are following them in our everyday work.
We are ECAAS (Environmental Certification and Assessment Service) Certified (ISO 45001 Safety Management), and we have a 100% rating with SiteWise (when it only takes 90% to achieve gold grading).
Of course, we have the equipment necessary for safety. Our PPE keeps us safe, whereas our careful project planning and execution keeps our clients and the public safe as well.
